The novel starts with the day-to-day happenings of Rajan's family in Trichy. He is caught in a dilemma of being the only one who can take care of his family because his father, Natesan, is too busy with business and his two younger sisters are studying. Rajan lives with the knowledge that he will have to marry someday and it will be someone outside Trichy. He has three potential brides in mind for marriage - Latha, Shobhaa and Geethamma - all girls from different backgrounds geographically but not economically. Latha is the daughter of a wealthy businessman who lives in Chennai. She has lived in town all her life and knows no more than Trichy. There is more to her than meets the eye. Shobhaa is the daughter of an artist who lives in Cochin. Her father has abandoned her because of his life long struggle with alcohol and not enough money to support himself. She has therefore made her home at home since she was six years old, bringing up Shobhaa and Geethamma on her own. She is so taken up with her family's welfare that she hardly takes time for herself. Geethamma is the daughter of a wealthy businessman who lives in Chennai. Her father is an alcoholic and has not seen her for years. He died in a car accident two months ago. Geethamma has inherited her father's mansion in Chennai with all his properties, including his gold mine. She loves shopping and dresses to impress people. Rajan has five sisters - Pooja, Neethana, Nandhini, Savithri and Sushila - and a younger brother named Chandran. He gets up at 4:30 a.m. to take care of the horses. The main job for him is to sell the daily supply of turmeric to the merchants in town. He does not like turmeric because he believes that turmeric is made from human flesh or at least that it is analogous to it. His father's business revolves around making turmeric so he has no time for his youngest children. His father Natesan Naganathan, an entrepreneur, runs a chain of grocery shops. His wife Pammi brings up their three children - Rajan, his younger brother Chandran and sisters Pooja, Neethana and Savithri by herself with Pammi working as a maid in the household. There is an air of excitement in the town when it comes to Sankranthi. This could be because of the current festival season, when people are celebrating the coming of spring. The time for marriages is almost here because boys are looking forward to their future lives with their brides, while girls are spending their last moments in single life. Have there been any changes in Trichy during the time spent by Rajan? And has he made any changes himself? What has he become? Will he ever get married? These questions will be answered after reading the rest of this novel.
